The average American takes 2-3 flights per year. That's 2-3 opportunities to overpay, waste time in lines, and arrive stressed. These 15 airport hacks are practical, proven, and will make flying significantly less painful.
Booking Hacks
1. Book on Tuesday at 1 PM. Airlines typically release deals on Monday nights and competitors match prices by Tuesday afternoon. It's not a huge difference β maybe $20-50 β but it adds up over multiple flights.
2. Use Google Flights and set fare alerts. Enter your route and dates, then click "Track prices." Google will email you when prices drop. The price calendar view shows you the cheapest days to fly at a glance.
3. Book 1-3 months in advance for domestic flights. Less than 3 weeks = expensive. More than 4 months = airlines haven't set competitive prices yet. The sweet spot for domestic flights is 4-8 weeks ahead.
4. Consider budget airlines for short flights. Spirit, Frontier, and Allegiant are fine for 1-3 hour flights if you pack a personal item only. The base fare is $30-80. Just don't add bags or seat selection β that's how they get you.
At the Airport
5. Check in online exactly 24 hours before. You can often choose a better seat and some airlines (Southwest) assign boarding positions based on check-in time.
6. Wear slip-on shoes through security. You're going to take them off. Make it fast. Avoid boots, high-tops, or anything with buckles.
7. Pack liquids in a clear bag before you leave home. Don't wait until you're at the TSA table fumbling through your bag. Have your 3-1-1 bag ready to pull out in one motion.
8. Use TSA PreCheck or CLEAR. TSA PreCheck costs $78 for 5 years ($15.60/year) and lets you skip the main security line, keep your shoes on, and leave your laptop in your bag. If you fly 2+ times per year, it pays for itself in saved stress alone.
9. Bring an empty water bottle. Water at the airport costs $4-6 for a small bottle. Bring an empty reusable bottle, fill it at a water fountain after security, and save $8-12 per trip.
Saving Money at the Airport
10. Eat before you get to the airport. Airport food costs 2-3x what it does outside. A $6 sandwich becomes $14. If you can't eat beforehand, pack snacks in your carry-on (solid food goes through TSA fine β only liquids are restricted).
11. Get free lounge access with a credit card. Cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve, Amex Platinum, or Capital One Venture X include Priority Pass lounge access. Free food, drinks, WiFi, and comfortable seating. If you already have one of these cards, download the Priority Pass app and check for lounges at your airport.
12. Park offsite. Airport parking is $15-30/day. Offsite lots (SpotHero, The Parking Spot) are $8-15/day with free shuttle service. Or use Uber/Lyft β often cheaper than 3+ days of parking.
During the Flight
13. Download entertainment before boarding. Airplane WiFi is slow and costs $8-16. Download Netflix shows, Spotify playlists, podcasts, and books while you still have free WiFi at home or the airport.
14. Bring your own headphones. Airlines charge $3-5 for cheap earbuds that hurt. Your own headphones are better and free.
15. Sit in the back for better service. The back of the plane boards last but has advantages: flight attendants are stationed nearby (faster drink service), the back rows are often emptier (more space), and you're closer to extra snacks.
