Your internet plan says 300 Mbps, but your bedroom gets 15 Mbps and your backyard gets nothing. Sound familiar? The problem isn't your internet provider β€” it's your router placement and setup. Most people plug their router in wherever the cable comes out of the wall and hope for the best. With a few changes, you can have fast, reliable Wi-Fi in every corner of your home.

Router placement matters more than router price

Step 1: Place Your Router Correctly

Wi-Fi radiates outward from your router like light from a lamp. If your router is in a corner of the house, half the signal is going outside. The ideal placement:

  • Central location in your home
  • Elevated β€” on a shelf or mounted on a wall, not on the floor
  • Out in the open β€” not inside a cabinet, closet, or behind a TV
  • Away from microwaves, baby monitors, and thick walls/mirrors

Moving your router from a corner closet to a central shelf can double your coverage area.

Step 2: Use the 5GHz Band

Most modern routers broadcast two networks: 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Use 5GHz for devices near the router (faster speeds, less interference). Use 2.4GHz for devices far from the router (longer range, slower but more penetrating through walls).

πŸ’‘ Pro Tip: Rename your Wi-Fi networks to make them obvious. Example: "HomeWiFi-5G" for the 5GHz band and "HomeWiFi-2.4G" for 2.4GHz. Connect nearby devices (smart TV, gaming console) to 5G and distant devices (backyard camera, garage speaker) to 2.4G.
