America has some of the most beautiful roads on Earth. These 10 drives deliver jaw-dropping scenery, charming small towns, and unforgettable experiences. Each can be done in a day but deserves a weekend.
1. Pacific Coast Highway (California)
Route: Dana Point to Leggett (655 miles). The crown jewel of American road trips. Sheer cliffs dropping into the Pacific, the Bixby Bridge in Big Sur, elephant seals at Piedras Blancas, and some of the most dramatic coastline on the planet. Best in spring (wildflowers) or fall (fewer crowds). Allow 3-5 days to enjoy it properly.
2. Blue Ridge Parkway (Virginia to North Carolina)
Route: 469 miles through the Appalachian Mountains. The most visited unit in the National Park System. Rolling green mountains, gorgeous overlooks, and fall foliage that'll take your breath away. Speed limit is 45 mph β this drive forces you to slow down and enjoy it. October is peak fall color season.
3. Going-to-the-Sun Road (Montana)
Route: 50 miles through Glacier National Park. Carved into the side of mountains with sheer drop-offs, this road climbs to 6,646 feet at Logan Pass. Alpine meadows, waterfalls, and possibly mountain goats and grizzly bears. Open June-October (weather dependent). Arrive early β parking fills by 8-9 AM in summer.
4. Overseas Highway (Florida)
Route: Miami to Key West (113 miles). Drive over the ocean on 42 bridges connecting the Florida Keys. Turquoise water on both sides, the famous Seven Mile Bridge, and ending in funky, laid-back Key West. Best December-April. Allow a full day with stops.
5. Route 66 (Illinois to California)
Route: Chicago to Santa Monica (2,400 miles). The Mother Road of American culture. Neon signs, vintage diners, quirky roadside attractions, and small-town America. It's not the fastest way across the country β that's the point. Allow 2 weeks for the full route, or pick a section (New Mexico and Arizona are the most scenic).
6. Hana Highway (Maui, Hawaii)
Route: 64 miles, 620 curves, and 59 bridges through tropical rainforest. Waterfalls, black sand beaches, bamboo forests, and roadside banana bread stands. Takes 2-3 hours one way but plan a full day. Start early, drive slowly, and pull over often.
7. Beartooth Highway (Montana to Wyoming)
Route: 68 miles climbing to 10,947 feet. Charles Kuralt called it "the most beautiful drive in America." Alpine plateaus above the treeline, switchbacks, snowfields in July, and Yellowstone National Park at the end. Open late May through mid-October.
8. Trail Ridge Road (Colorado)
Route: 48 miles through Rocky Mountain National Park, topping out at 12,183 feet β the highest continuously paved road in the US. Tundra landscapes, elk herds, and views that stretch forever. Open late May through October.
9. Acadia National Park Loop Road (Maine)
Route: 27-mile loop through one of the most beautiful parks on the East Coast. Rocky coastline, Cadillac Mountain (first place in the US to see sunrise), and charming Bar Harbor. Best in fall for foliage. Free with park pass ($35/vehicle).
10. Million Dollar Highway (Colorado)
Route: Silverton to Ouray (25 miles). Narrow, winding, no guardrails, and absolutely terrifying β in the best way. Former mining towns, 10,000+ foot passes, and San Juan Mountain scenery that rivals Switzerland. Part of the San Juan Skyway loop. Not for nervous drivers.
